Nitro 2021 Snowboards Overview

A few different things in the 2021 Nitro lineup, with some changes to existing boards, as well as some completely new models – The Victoria Pro, the T3, Beauty and a redesigned Slash.

Overviews of other brands: Burton, Lib Tech, Capita, JonesNever Summer, Bataleon, GNU, Korua Shapes, Salomon

Nitro Camber Profiles

Burton call their camber profiles “bends” which does make a bit more sense, especially as quite a lot of their models have squeezebox – which is actually changing the board profile with different sections of thick and thin.

True Camber

The original camber profile, that gives you the best edge hold, the most pop and a very stable feel.

Cam-Out Camber

Pretty much a regular camber profile, that is just a little bit mellower at the contact points of the board, so you still get the good parts of camber, with a slightly easier to ride feel.

Flat Out Rocker

A flat profile, that has rocker on the nose and tail lifting the contact points just a little bit, which gives it easy, smooth and forgiving ride.

Gullwing

A hybrid profile, that has rocker between your feet, and camber on the nose and tail. I mix between everything, the rocker sections help for float in powder, as well as smooth and easy turns, while the camber sections add grip and a bit of pop.

Base Materials

The same for every brand, there are the two main versions of base materials – sintered and extruded. Extruded is easier and cheaper to make, it keeps the cost of the board down, and doesn’t need much maintenance, though they aren’t very fast.

Sintered bases are much faster, but you do need to wax them. A properly maintained and waxed board with a sintered base will be quick.

There are different levels of sintered bases, the denser and harder the material, the faster it will be.

Premium FH Extruded Base

The simplest base material, extruded is the slowest on snow, but it keeps the cost of the board down and is the easiest to repair. It is on the cheapest few boards at the bottom of the range, even though it has premium in its name.

Sintered Speed Formula HD

A basic hard and fast material, that does a good job soaking up wax and keeping you moving fast.

Sintered Speed Formula II

The next step up in sintered materials, with wax infused into the base to make it perform well in all snow conditions.

Sintered Speed Formula II Damast

Made with the same compound as the Speed Formula II base, it is mixed from two dyed colour versions for a different look – each one is a bit different.

Nitro Specific Features:

Ureshred

Used on their park boards, the Ureshred sidewalls are made from polyurethane (skate wheel material), which means they are good at taking a beating, and helping to absort impacts on rails. Similar to Slimewalls on Ride snowboards.

PowerPods

With a mix of sidecuts, between the feet there is a smaller sidecut, and a larger one outside your feet. It does a couple of things, it makes the board smooth and quick to make fast turns once you put it on its edge, as well as making the board wider under your feet, which gives extra grip and suits riders with bigger boots.

Railkiller Edges

Twice as thick edges as regular boards, they are less likely to crack from hitting rails.

Hike Pods

Wider sections under the bindings on the Doppelganger Splitboard, it gives a bit of extra grip when you are in hike more.

Softride Flex

Extra soft flexing boards for kids, it is made with a binding raiser that keeps the flex smooth, but still keeps the mounting point for the bindings as strong as a regular boards.

Ballistic Impact Panels

Kevlar is used around the bindings to handle very hard landings and impacts from crashes.

A few features to keep an eye on

How to work out what features you are going to need in a board

Shape: Directional is going to work best for most people, and you will still be able to ride it switch. Swallowtail for very directional looking powder boards, that will have a long nose and short tail. The park boards will probably have a twin or directional twin shape, so that they are close to the same feeling whether you are riding regular or switch (backwards).

Camber: From aggressive to easy – True Camber, Cam-Out Camber, Gullwing Rocker and then Flat Out Rocker. Basically it changes how hard the board will grip into the snow, and how direct it will feel.

Width: If you have big boots, US size 11 or up, look at getting a board with a wide waist width, that is closer to or above 260mm, so that you get the least two and heel drag.

Flex: Softer flexing boards are easy to move around and twist, easy to ride but are harder work at high speeds and through rough terrain. Medium suits most riders, while aggressive riders might want a stiff board that give them a solid feel at high speed.

Core: As you go up in the range, they add in different mixes of poplar and beech woods to get a balance of weight/strength. There are also some different core profiles, where they vary thin and thick sections of the core to get a different ride.

Laminates: Bi-Lite laminates have two directions of fibers, which give the board a more forgiving feel that is easier to flex, while Tri-Lite laminates had more torsional stiffness, that is harder to twist. Tri-Lite is generally just found on a few of the stiffer, higher end boards.

Base: Extruded is slower and cheaper, sintered is faster but more expensive and needs to be regularly waxed.

Nitro Cannon 2021

nitro cannon 2021
Nitro Cannon 2021

The Cannon shows up in videos quite often, and it stands out because of its giant length and super swallowtail shape. It comes in two sizes, the big 173cm and the huge 203cm. I have ridden the 173cm version, and even though that is much longer than what I would normally have, it doesn’t ride like a board that long. The shorter effective edge means it rides like a shorter board, but is still nice and stable with the Cam-Out camber profile.

Nitro Slash 2021

nitro slash snowboard 2021

The Slash has been around for a few years now, where it just came in one length – 163cm. It has a pointy powder look, and a lightweight 3D Balsa core. The new version is very different, it just took on the old name.

The new version has a wide waist width, solid and stable fairly stiff flex, which will make it a good option for riders who want a board that will carve well, and float easily in powder. The new version comes in three sizes. 151, 156 and 162cm.

Nitro Fusion 2021

nitro fusion 2021
Nitro Fusion 2021

The Fusion is one of my favourites in the Quiver range, it has a classic all mountain shape, the solid Cam-Out camber profile and a mid-wide width which makes it a bit easier to carve hard, and get some extra float in deep snow. It comes in two sizes – 154 and 159cm.

Nitro Banker 2021

Fairly similar in specs to the Fusion, it is a little bit stiffer, and has the slightly more aggressive True Camber. It would be a good option if going fast is what you want from a board.

Nitro Pow 2021

nitro pow 2021
Nitro Pow 2021

A big fat pow surfer, the huge 280mm waist width gives the board tons of surface area, even for the 154cm length. It has a pretty simple features and construction, that keep the price from being too expensive, the main thing that you want from a board like this is the shape. The True Camber gives the Pow a solid and poppy feel, and plenty of grip and edge hold on cat tracks when you are out looking for deep snow.

Nitro Doppelganger 2021

nitro doppelganger 2021
Nitro Doppelganger 2021

The Doppelganger is a very lightweight, splitboard thats biggest feature is the Koroyd Powercore. It is made from a whole lot of miniature tubes, that are welded together – which make it 70% lighter than regular balsa wood, and with no loss of strength or flex. Saving weight is always good, but especially noticeable on heavier splitboards.

The Cam-Out profile gives it plenty of stability and edge hold, and the Hike Pods add extra grip for icy sections when you are skinning up.

Nitro Highlander 2021

Getting into the high end boards, the Highlander comes in long lengths (159 and 163cm), has a True Camber profile and a medium stiff flex. With the light Koroyd core, directional mid-stiff flex, it would suit riders who are used to full camber, and want to ride a light, smooth board as fast as they can.

Nitro Woodcarver 2021

nitro woodcarver snowboard 2021
Nitro Woodcarver 2021

The Woodcarver is a really fun board, although it is very stable and floats well in powder, I can’t think of many that are as much fun to just turn. It has a fairly narrow waist width (251mm at 159cm), so turns feel very quick and direct. It feels like minimal effort is needed to start a turns, and keeps a very stable feel even on chopped up snow. Overall a fast, lightweight very fun board that has a ride that matches its pretty high price.

One of the more interesting designs, the Santoku is an all mountain board with an All-Terrain Twin shape, with a long but soft nose and tail. A fun board once I got used to the soft feeling flex, it has a very smooth feel even in deep snow.

Nitro Squash 2021

nitro squash 2021
Nitro Squash 2021

One of my favourites, there is a reason the Squash was taken from the Quiver range and became its own full model, now with a split, womens and kids version. Even though it has such a directional/powder look, it would be right up there for boards I would choose just to carve on groomers. The True Camber gives it a very sold and stable feel, the stiff tail lets you push hard and accelerate out of turns, while the long nose gives lots of float in powder. It comes in 153, 159 and 163cm lengths, though I would choose the size down from what you normally ride.

Nitro Team / Team Exposure 2021

nitro team 2021
Nitro Team 2021

The Nitro Team is one of their staples, a directional twin board, with a camber profile that is an easy choice for a board that will ride everything on the mountain. Being such a popular board, there is also the Exposure version (which have a different graphic from the regular Team, but is the same board).

A solid flex, great edge hold and a quick base, if there was only one board I could ride this would probably be it. It comes in a million sizes – 152 155 157 157w 159 159w 162 162w 165w.

This version is easier to ride than the camber, with the rocker between your feet to give you a looser feel, that turns with less effort, while the camber sections on the nose and tail help to give the board some more grip and pop. Comes in 152 155 157 157w 159 159w 162 162w 165w.

Nitro Dropout 2021

Nitro Dropout 2021

Although the specs make it seem quite similar to a few of the other Nitro boards, the Dropout rides quite a bit differently. It has a mid wide width, as well as Power Pods, so it can handle riders with bigger boots without a problem. It has the Cam-Out camber profile, so it has a solid ride, but is still quite playful and feels softer than they rate it. It comes in three sizes, the 153, 156 and 159cm.
