Bataleon 2021 Snowboards Overview -

A few new models for the Bataleon 2021 range – an upgraded Party Wave+, Camel Two, Thunder and the Stuntwood. Quite a few new sizes for older models, especially in the Freeride and Directional categories.

The most unique and biggest selling point of Bataleon boards is the 3d base shaping they have, called 3BT (Triple Base Technology). Basically, all of their boards have some level of traditional camber, and they raise/lift the contact points (corners) of the boards to create a looser feel when you are riding it with a flat base, and the feel of a regular camber board once you get it onto its edge.

Their powder and freeride boards have very large lifted sections, to give them almost a boat shape, with a very surfy feel. Their all-mountain boards have a medium amount, and their jib/park boards have just a little. It obviously works, with Jones, Lobster, Rome and Burton having boards with some sort of 3D base shaping.

It varies quite a lot with each model, but that is a very simple quick explanation of the shaping.

Tech features in Bataleon boards:

Fiberglass

There are two options Bataleon use, which are Triax and Biax. The simpler option is Biax, that has two directions of fibers and is used on boards that a softer or cheaper, and don’t need any extra torsional stiffness.

Triax is used on boards that need a bit of extra stiffness, and it adds a bit more twisting (torsional) response to the board.

On top of that, Carbon Stringers are sometimes added to change the flex, response or how damp the board feels when riding.

Supertubes

There are three levels of Supertubes

D.R.S.T. Dual Radial Super Tubes

6 hollow carbon tubes that run parrallel to the edges of the board, to give it better response to the edge of the board.

D.S.T. Dual Super Tubes

Two carbon tubes that are made to give the board more snap.

C.S.T. Central Super Tube

One tube that runs down the middle of the board, that helps with the pop but doesn’t make the board stiffer torsionally.

Bases

They have some fancy marketing names for their different levels, which are:

Super Slick X: An extruded base, that is the slowest option they have, that is found on their cheaper or entry level boards.

Hyper Glide S: A standard sintered base material.

Ultra Glide S: A denser and faster sintered material.

Nano Speed S: Their fastest option – race level base.

The simplest way is to look for the letter S (sintered) or X (eXtruded) in the name they use to get a quick idea of the material. If it is in your budget, I would always recommend getting a board with a sintered base, but it isn’t a deal breaker.

AirRide

This is added into the core on some of their top few models (Surfer LTD, Boss, Jam and Stallion) to decrease the amount of chatter when you are riding at high speed.

Bataleon Surfer LTD

The LTD (limited) version of the Surfer means that there are just 150 made. Each one is numbered, and comes in a neoprene (wetsuit) material sleeve for protection. Compared to the regular version, the LTD has different graphics, and the fastest base option that Bataleon have.

I was lucky enough to be able to test the 2021 LTD out, and although it is way out of my price range, it has the performance to match the $1200 price tag. While it originally came out in just the 159cm size, there is now a 154cm option as well.

Bataleon Surfer

Still far from a cheap board at $800, the Surfer is easily recognisable with its super wide nose, and deep swallowtail shape. It has the Pow 3BT base shape, which has quite a narrow centre base, and lots of uplift for a very “boaty” shape. With the pretty aggressive shape, it floats in powder with zero effort, but still somehow manages to be just as much fun on groomed runs, it holds a very good edge and is smooth edge to edge.

The Surfer has been getting more popular each season, and the 2021 now has a few extra sizes added, so there are now: 138, 149, 154, 159 and 162cm options.

Bataleon Storm

The Storm is a mid flexing, womens freeride board. The Freeride 3BT has a larger amount of shaping in the nose than the tail, and the Dynamic Camber has plenty of shape to push against. The backseat inserts let you mount your bindings a long way back, to get the most float out of the Storm as possible.

Bataleon Carver

Like the name suggests, the Carver is made to carve. It has all the ingredients of a good carving board, which are a directional shape, 13mm of taper (wider nose than tail), 25mm setback stance, dynamic (larger amount of) camber and a stiff flex.

Wider than regular boards, the waist width on even the smallest 154cm model is 259mm, and goes up to 262mm on the biggest size. The wider width will help you push the board further over, without getting toe or heel drag as early as you would on a regular width board.

Bataleon Party Wave

Bataleons option in the popular short/wide style of boards, the Party Wave is designed to be a fun board to ride in all conditions. It has a fairly soft flex, 20mm of taper and a basic extruded base that keep it on the cheaper end, at $400. Make sure you ride this around 5-10cms shorter than your regular board. Although there are a few tiny differences, read my review of the Lobster Aaron Schwartz to get an idea of what this board is like.

Bataleon Party Wave+

Although the Party Wave is quite a popular one, it does have some shortcomings, which are all taken care of in the upgraded Party Wave Plus. It has a stiffer flex rating, upgraded fiberglass and a faster sintered base on top of a lighter core. The upgrades cost an extra $160 compared to the regular model.

Bataleon Camel Two

The Camel Two is a new model this year, and is based on the Camel Toe. If you compare it to the Camel Tow, the Camel Two has a slightly stiffer flex, a lighter core and a faster base.

Another new model this season, the Thunder is a mens directional freeride board that is based on the women’s Thunder. It has a little bit of a setback stance (10mm), as well as the option of mounting the bindings all the way back for deep days with the backseat inserts.

Bataleon Camel Toe

The Camel Toe has been around a few years, and was one of the choices I remember seeing a long time ago when I was looking for an affordable powder board. It has a pretty simple construction, which keep the price down while still giving it the features it needs. The Pow 3BT shaping gives it a large and very shaped nose, for a surfy feel and easy float in powder.

Being the affordable powder board, if you want to upgrade to the Camel Two you get a faster base, lighter core and a bit of a stiffer flex.

Bataleon Jam

The Jam is a high end, freestyle and all mountain board with a stiffer flex. It has a light core, fast base and plenty of camber, as well as the Freestyle 3BT base shaping to keep it catch free.

Bataleon Stallion

As you can tell that is has almost the same graphics, the Stallion is The Jam that is made for bigger riders with bigger feet. The flex is a tiny bit stiffer, but the main difference is the extra width that can handle big boots. It comes in 3 sizes, 164, 167 and 172cm wide models, with waist widths up to a huge 282mm.

Bataleon Spirit

The spirit has just been around for a couple of years now, but it would be the choice if you are looking at getting your first board, and don’t want to spend too much. It has a very soft flex, and the mellow camber and catch free Freestyle 3BT make it as easy as possible to learn on without getting frustrated. It has a simple construction that keeps the cost down, but for beginners there won’t be any features you feel you are missing.

Bataleon Magic Carpet

One of the more unique shapes, the Magic Carpet is a twin shaped powder board. Most powder boards are going to have a bit of a tradeoff when riding switch, but not this one. It does that by having quite the very shaped nose and tail, as well as the wider width. This year it has a downgrade from the sintered base it used to have to an extruded.

Bataleon Global Warmer

The Global Warmer is a soft flexing park board, made with mostly high end ingredients. A light core, Central Super Tube and Carbon stringers help keep it stable while still making it easy to press. This year it has been downgraded from having a sintered base to just an extruded, which doesn’t really make sense for a “high end” park board, and definitely not for the high price.

Bataleon Disaster

Along with the Wallie and the Blow, the Disaster is one of the boards you would look at if you are a park rider who wants a soft board for rails. One of the most toned down boards in the line, it has a really soft flex, a low amount of camber and a big centre base to make it easy to lock onto rails. Simple construction keep the price down, and the extruded base is easy to repair, which is likely for a jib board.

Another cheap park twin, this has an even softer flex rating than the Disaster, with most of the same features. One thing that it has that is different is the Shock Walls, which means the sidewalls are infused with urethane (skate wheel material) so the do a better job at absorbing vibrations, and can take a bit more of a beating on rails.
