Salomon Huck Knife Pro

Salomon Huck Knife Pro Review

The Salomon Huck Knife Pro is the upgraded, stiffer and quicker version of the regular Huck Knife, which is a good thing.

How it Rides

Board size: 152cm

Boots: Salomon Launch Boa 27.5

Bindings: Salomon Highlander (Medium)

I am 6 foot tall and weigh 155lbs – or 183cm tall and 70kg.

I was riding this board at Big White in BC Canada. There was a little bit of fresh snow around that had built up in the trees, but probably no more than 5cm.

I was pretty familiar with a lot of the features of the Huck Knife Pro, mainly from owning the regular Huck Knife and the Ultimate Ride (back when it was a twin shape).

For a while the Huck Knife Pro was the stiffer, upgraded version of the Huck Knife, though it did cross over with the Ultimate ride in an odd way. The had the same profile, twin shape, core, flex, base and sidewalls. I guess to differentiate them a couple of seasons ago the Ulimate Ride changed shape to be directional, add taper and setback, as well as being a touch softer.

The 152cm board is quite small for me, and I am at the very top of end the recommended weight range for that size.

Camber Profile

The Quad camber profile basically rides like traditional camber to me. It has all the things you would expect a camber board to have – stability at high speed, good pop or spring and solid edge hold.

Flex and Pop

Although the Huck Knife Pro does have quite a stiff flex rating, it is never too hard to flex. It pushes back really nicely, so once you get used to it you can get big ollies without much effort.

Edge Hold

All camber boards are going to give you good edge hold, the the Huck Knife Pro is no exception. It has strong but it is very predictable hold, even when the snow gets firm and icy.

Turns

Because I was riding this in a fairly small size compared to what I am used to, it did give me a few good advantages. With the waist width at only 251mm, and with my size 9.5 boots it felt extremely quick edge to edge.

Float

I didn’t ride it in any deep powder, but I wouldn’t expect much from a 152cm, cambered, twin park board in fresh snow anyway.

Speed

The Huck Knife Pro is a quick board, it was freshly waxed but the Sintered EG base (that is the same I have ridden in a few boards) does very well in a lot of different snow conditions.

Overall

Overall the Huck Knife Pro is a good upgrade to the regular Huck Knife. I did find after a season of riding my Huck Knife almost every day, it does break in quite a bit, so it was good to get a more responsive, poppier version of that.

I think that riding it in a smaller size gave a few advantages – the lower weight, and narrower waist width meant that it was very easy to turn, and always felt responsive. Judging from how my 155 Ultimate Ride felt, I think that going one size smaller toned down the stiffness a little.

It is very stable and solid on jumps, even icy landings I felt quite safe on. Ollies were big, needed only a tiny bit of effort and the overall flex was perfect for me.

If you were looking at a park board, the easy choice would be to narrow it down to one of the two Huck Knives. I would say if you want a softer flexing board that is going to be a little nicer on rails, choose the Huck Knife, and if you want to ride more jumps go for the Huck Knife Pro.

Salomon Ultimate Ride

Although they used to be similar, the Ultimate Ride is a good option if you like the sound of the Huck Knife Pro, but want a more directional board, for all-mountain riding.

Nitro Beast

I found that the Beast was a very stiff board, so although it has a similar set of features (stiff, camber, twin) it was a whole lot more work to ride

Features of the Salomon Huck Knife Pro

True Twin

The true twin shape means that the board is symmetrical, so other than the graphics it will ride exactly the same both ways.

Quad Camber

Basically just regular camber, though the pressure at the contact points are released just a little with the tiny rocker section.
