Never Summer Proto HD Review
The Proto HD has Never Summer’s Rocker Camber profile, which has a rocker section between your feet, and camber sections that extend from under your bindings out towards the tip and tail of the board.
The Rocker section in the middle of the board helps to keep a looser feeling in the board, while also helping it float in powder.
The Camber sections give you good edge hold, pop and stability for when you are riding fast.
The Carbonium topsheet is a tough material that is made to help protect the board against damage and give you a bit of grip when you are skating around. It also has a carbon fiber type look to it.
Things inside the board
From Never Summers website:
The Carbonium Laminate Technology combines an advanced top and base carbon matrix to maximize torsional response and strength where it’s needed most.
Well that is great description if they want to cram in loads of technical words that anyone buying a snowboard isn’t going to understand.
Basicaly they add carbon, which is light and strong to the board, which helps add torsional strength/response. Torsional meaning if you were to twist the board while you are riding, for example if you are lifting your toes up on your front foot while lifting up your heel on your back foot.
The NS Superlight Wood Core is just like it sounds, a very light core. It is made up of a combination of light woods blended withs strong wood to make a good balance between strength and weight.
The Vario Power Grip Sidecut is a fancy name for the way that they cut out the sidecut of the board.
On a regular, plain board with a Radial Sidecut, one giant circle is used to (cut out) make the sidecut. What Never Summer have done is use a bunch of different sized circles, as well as leave a flat section on the middle rocker part of the board.
What it means is that you end up with more contact points (better for grip) touching the snow, and a smoother start and exit to your turns, while still having a stable feel when you are riding straight.
The base material is sintered, which means that it is tough, fast on snow and does a good job at soaking up wax. There is also graphite added to the base for some extra speed.
Features of the Never Summer Proto HD
- Carbonium Topsheet
- Carbonium Laminate Technology
- Extended Transition Rocker Camber Profile
Their original hybrid camber design, which has 3 main pressure areas on the board. There is a rocker section between your feet, which changes to camber underneat your feet, then back out to rocker on the tip and tail of the board. You end up with a playful ride, but it still gives you a stable and solid ride when you need it.
- Vario Power Grip Sidecut
There are a few different radiuses, which are combined to give the board extra contact points, so you get better edge hold. Out towards the nose and tail, there are deep radius sections, which change to shallow radius sections, then to a straight section in the middle of the board.
- Low Profile Tip/Tail
Low profile (thinner) tip and tail keep the highest amount of board touching the snow – which helps for float, pop for ollies and nollies and gives you more stability when your landings aren’t perfect, while keeping the weight down.
- STS Pretensioned Fiberglass
This is a pre-hardened and pre-tensioned laminate that has elastomer stringers between the 0 and 90 degree glass fibers.
- Bi-Lite Fiberglass
This has some of the strength features of the STS fiberglass, but is much lighter.
- NS SuperLight Wood Core
The core is made from sustainable Hybrid Poplar wood, that is combined with Birch hardwood.
- Harmonic Tip/Tail Damper
These are made to try and remove small vibrations in the nose and tail, which help to keep the board stable when you are riding fast, but without removing the pop of the board.
- Perforated Rocker Pad
- RDS 2 Damping System
There are three narrower laminated damping layers, that are made to get a combination of vibration, absorbtion and stability. It is made to get a nice mix of stability for freeriding, and liveliness for freestyle riding.
- Elastomeric Underfoot Stabilizers
Under the bindings are areas that are made to absorb vibration, keep the board stable at speed and help reduce foot fatigue (by getting rid of vibrations).
- Sintered P-tex Sidewall
P-Tex sidewalls have the advantage of being able to handle colder temperatures compared to ABS sidewalls, that can crack.
- Durasurf XT Sintered 5501 Base
The base material used on the higher end Never Summer boards, which is fast and durable, and has added graphite.
